Lib Dems: Collapse of SAFE negotiations “Sends the worst possible sign to Moscow"

28 Nov 2025

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to reports that the UK has walked away from an EU rearmament plan over ‘pay-to-play’ demands, James MacCleary, the Liberal Democrats’ Defence Spokesperson, commented:

“This sends the worst possible sign to Moscow. Brussels should be straining every sinew to deepen collaboration on defence with Britain, not penny pinching over entry fees. Keir Starmer needs to pick up the phone to President Macron and make the case that Paris cutting off its nose to spite its face in these negotiations only benefits Putin.

“The UK makes a massive contribution to European security - and protectionism is not the answer to the shared threats we face. Europe is strong when we work together.”
