Lib Dems: Govt must protect “English football’s soul” and bring in “Golden Share”

24 Oct 2025

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to the news that Sheffield Wednesday is to file for administration, Anna Sabine MP, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Culture, Media and Sport, said:

“Sheffield Wednesday’s fall into administration lays bare the hollowing of English football’s soul, as irresponsible owners pick its riches clean and leave only bones for the vultures of administration.

“Chansiri must listen to fans and ensure a new owner - one that actually cares about the survival of the club - is appointed at the earliest opportunity.

“Liberal Democrats are calling on the Government and the Independent Football Regulator to urgently introduce a “Golden Share” for recognised fan groups, so that supporters have a veto to stop rogue owners destroying their clubs from the inside.”
