Lib Dems: "half-baked announcements" from the Government won't achieve crucial water sector reform

2 Jul 2025

EMBARGO: 00:01 Wednesday 2nd July

Responding to the news that customers are set to receive compensation for water service failures, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Tim Farron said:

“For far too long, households across the country have put up with water companies increasing bills whilst polluting waters with sewage, neglecting vital infrastructure and racking up debt.

"Half-baked announcements like this from the Government won't achieve the fundamental reform needed to provide customers with the good value, quality service they deserve after years of neglect. To create real change in our failing water industry, the regulator Ofwat must be abolished and replaced with a new tough regulator that can hold companies accountable.

"The Liberal Democrats will continue to hold the government’s feet to the fire until they knuckle down and get tough on polluting water companies to provide customers with good value."
