Lib Dems launch campaign for Harry Kane knighthood after World Cup heroics
The Liberal Democrats have tabled a motion in Parliament calling for England captain Harry Kane to be awarded a knighthood, following his sensational, tournament-saving performance against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday evening.
The motion, put forward by Liberal Democrat MP, Layla Moran, celebrates England’s thrilling 2026 World Cup campaign so far and officially notes the pride that Kane has brought the country - now surpassing the legendary Pelé in total World Cup goals scored.
With a pivotal clash against Mexico looming early on Monday, Moran is urging MPs from every party to get behind the campaign, and for the Government and the Palace to get the sword ready for 'Sir Harry'.
The Liberal Democrats are also urging future prime minister Andy Burnham to sign up to the campaign and get behind Harry Kane.
Liberal Democrat MP and football fan Layla Moran said:
"Harry Kane has shown inspirational leadership and character on and off the pitch - championing the very values that make our country so great.
"If Andy Burnham wants to kick off his premiership on the right foot he should back my campaign. This is about bringing the country together. I hope every England fan encourages their MP to sign!
"Let’s get behind the lads for Mexico on Monday, and let's make sure Harry Kane comes home not just with the trophy, but with a well-deserved knighthood."
