Lib Dems launch giant new Trumpflation campaign accusing Badenoch and Farage of “cheerleading” higher prices

  • Lib Dems launch major new “Trumpflation” campaign as latest inflation figures reveal impact of Iran War on prices in the UK

  • Party unveils a giant inflated Trump on Whitehall flanked by “cheerleaders” Farage and Badenoch

  • Daisy Cooper calls for emergency fuel duty cut as poll reveals Brits stockpiling fuel and cutting back spending to afford petrol

The Liberal Democrats have launched a major new campaign highlighting the impact of “Trumpflation” and calling for urgent action to cut fuel prices and help families with the cost of living,  as Trump’s Iran war causes the biggest rise in fuel prices in more than three years, according to the ONS.

It comes as the latest figures this morning reveal inflation rose to 3.3% in March as the impact of Trump’s war on Iran hit the British economy. The ONS said fuel prices saw their biggest increase since January 2023.

Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Daisy Cooper warned this morning that families’ budgets are suffering as Kemi Badenoch and Nigel Farage cheer on Trump’s war on Iran. She unveiled a massive inflated Trumpflation balloon in Whitehall, flanked by the Reform and Tory party leaders as cheerleaders.

Daisy Cooper said families were being forced to count their pennies and tighten their belts to make ends meet while Labour is consumed by sleaze and scandal, and urged the Government to stop navel gazing and start governing by cutting fuel duty as part of an emergency support package to tackle the cost of living.

Polling commissioned this week by the Liberal Democrats has revealed the British public are taking drastic action to afford spiralling fuel prices as the impact of “Trumpflation” bites.  Among those who drive a car regularly, nearly a third (30%) say they have cut back on other spending to afford fuel. 1 in 10 say they are stockpiling fuel, nearly half have driven less because of soaring fuel prices (49%), while over a quarter (28%) say they have delayed or cancelled non-essential journeys, such as visiting friends or family.

Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Daisy Cooper MP said:

“People across our country have been struggling for years with a devastating cost-of-living crisis and Donald Trump’s idiotic war in Iran has added to it. The cost of fuel is soaring, mortgage rates are rising and fixed energy deals are already going up by hundreds of pounds.

“But what is utterly inexcusable is that there are politicians in this country - Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch - who are happy to cheerlead Donald Trump as he hikes people’s bills. All the while this Labour Government promised to fix the country but instead we’ve got political Groundhog Day: yet more sleaze and scandal.

“It’s only the Lib Dems with a real plan to protect people from Trumpflation and cut fuel prices, rail fares and bus prices, bringing down the cost of living and protecting British families.”
