Lib Dems on two-child benefit cap: Government must finally “turn words into action”

30 Sep 2025

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to the news that the Chancellor is looking to lift the two-child benefit cap in November's Budget, Liberal Democrat Work and Pensions Spokesperson Steve Darling said:

"The Chancellor seems to have finally realised the obvious - that any serious child poverty strategy must start with scrapping this unfair policy, which is trapping more and more children into poverty.

"Lifting the two-child benefit cap is the quickest and most effective way to tackle the scourge of child poverty. And it’s the right thing for our economy too, supporting today’s children to have better health, education and employment prospects in their future.
"Now the Government must turn words into action and scrap the unfair two-child cap at the Autumn Budget without any further delay. This cannot just be a Treasury kite flown to see how people react."
