Liberal Democrats call for emergency food security summit as Iran conflict threatens ten billion meals a week

1 May 2026

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to reports that the conflict in Iran could impact up to 10 billion meals a week globally due to the interruption to supplies of fertiliser, hitting poorest countries the hardest, Liberal Democrat International Development Spokesperson, Monica Harding MP, said:

"These reports are harrowing. We cannot stand by while the reckless brinkmanship pursued by Donald Trump and the Iranian regime triggers a potentially catastrophic wave of hunger which will hit the world's poorest hardest. With ten billion meals a week at risk, we are on the precipice of a global humanitarian crisis.

“The Government needs to step up and show leadership: the Foreign Secretary must convene an emergency global food security summit immediately. We must work with our international partners to protect supply chains, secure fertiliser distribution, and ensure that the world’s poorest nations are not left to bear the brunt of this conflict.”
