Local election delays: change of law needed after "blatant stitch-up"
EMBARGO: Immediate release
Responding to the Government's confirmation that local election delays will go ahead, Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said:
“Labour are running scared of the electorate and denying millions of people a voice at May’s local elections.
“This blatant stitch‑up will allow some councillors to cling on to power for up to seven years without facing the voters.
“Ministers shouldn’t just be able to delay democracy at the stroke of a pen, we need a change in the law so MPs can vote on any future election delays and hold the government to account.”
