NHS £10.2bn repairs backlog: "Hospitals are falling apart at the seams"

13 Oct 2022

Responding to NHS statistics showing £10.2 billion is needed to clear the maintenance backlog and repair crumbling buildings, Liberal Democrat Health Spokesperson Daisy Cooper said:

"Our cash starved hospitals are falling apart at the seams, from crumbling roofs to ageing equipment.

"Patients deserve to be treated in clean and modern hospitals, whilst our hardworking NHS doctors and nurses should feel safe in work. Sadly as we speak, hospital buildings across the country literally have roofs which might collapse at any moment.

"In her first budget, Liz Truss put tax cuts for the wealthy over fixing Britain's health crisis. She simply doesn't care about our treasured NHS. Yesterday in Parliament, when I asked the Prime Minister to fund and fix crumbling hospitals roofs, she told me that tax cuts were more important.  The Government should scrap tax cuts for the richest companies and put the money where it matters - into our health and care services."
