EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Social Media Vote: "The time for half-measures is over"

Responding to the Government voting against imposing an age limit on social media, Munira Wilson MP, Liberal Democrat Education, Children and Families Spokesperson, said:

"The time for half-measures is over - we need action now to restrict the most harmful platforms for under-16s.

"Liberal Democrats will continue to push and fight for statutory guidance on smartphone bans in schools - children must be allowed to focus in the classroom.

"Online safety should not be a party-political issue - it’s about putting children’s safety first. We will continue to work cross-party to ensure these protections become a reality.

“The Government is moving towards the Liberal Democrat position by recognising that children of different ages require different protections online. This is exactly what we have set out with our social media age-rating proposals.”
