US economy downturn: “end this trade war”

30 Apr 2025

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to figures showing that the US economy shrank by 0.3% in the first quarter of 2025, Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson Daisy Cooper MP said:

“Trump’s first 100 days has seen a punishing trade war which has plunged Americans and people all around the world into further economic misery.

“The US President’s ongoing assault on the global economy is not just hammering consumers in America, it threatens thousands of British jobs and family finances during the worst cost of living crisis for a generation.

“We must end this trade war quickly, before more businesses suffer and prices spiral. The best way to do that is through strength, by building an economic coalition of the willing with our European and Commonwealth allies to stand up to Trump’s bullying tactics.”
