WASPI decision: a “hammer blow” to those who thought they would finally be treated fairly

29 Jan 2026

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to the Government’s decision that no compensation should be paid to WASPI women, Liberal Democrats Work and Pension Spokesperson, Steve Darling MP said:

“Millions of WASPI women will feel utterly betrayed today. The conclusion of this shambolic process is a hammer blow to all those women who thought they would finally be treated fairly.

"The Government has turned its back on millions of pension-age women who were wronged through no fault of their own, ignoring the independent Ombudsman’s findings. That is frankly disgraceful.

"Today’s heartless decision cannot be allowed to stand and Liberal Democrats will be pressing ministers to give those affected the fair treatment they deserve."

Notes to Editors:

Steve wrote to DWP Secretary of State Pat McFadden last week, calling for justice for WASPI women. This letter was signed by over 100 MPs. See here
