Weakening of BNG Mandate: now is not the time to dilute protections

28 May 2025

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to reports that the MHCLG has launched an 8-week consultation on whether to weaken the BNG mandate requirements, Liberal Democrat Housing and Planning spokesperson, Gideon Amos MP said:

"The Government now seem content to dilute protections of our waterways and local wildlife with vague promises of future benefits and little clarity about when they will materialise. Removing the rights of local communities and councillors over planning decisions only makes this worse.

"The Liberal Democrats have long led the campaign in parliament to clean up our rivers and chalk streams. We will continue to fight for their survival with our amendments to protect chalk streams and natural habitats in this Bill."
