West Midlands Police must now work to rebuild public trust

16 Jan 2026

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to the reports that Craig Guildford, West Midlands Police Chief has retired with immediate effect, Max Wilkinson MP, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesperson, said:

“Craig Guildford's position became untenable and it is right he has retired with immediate effect.

“The ban was an incredibly serious mistake - you don’t tackle antisemitism by banning its victims. The constabulary’s appearances at the Home Affairs select committee raised serious questions about errors of fact and of process.

“West Midlands Police must now work to rebuild public trust and focus on keeping communities safe, while supporting officers who serve with professionalism and integrity. We still need a full IOPC investigation. The Liberal Democrats will continue to push for accountability, transparency, and the resources needed to deliver policing people can trust.”
