YouGov: majority of Brits back Lib Dem call for free-to-air Premier League games as party vows to table new law
EMBARGO: Immediate Release
YouGov polling shows 6 in 10 Brits back the Lib Dems’ call to broadcast at least 10 Premier League games a season on free-to-air channels, as the party pledges to bring the legislation back to Parliament. An overwhelming majority of 2024 Labour voters support the plan.
The polling revealed that 6 in 10 Brits backed the move, proposed as part of the Football Governance Bill yesterday by Max Wilkinson, Lib Dem spokesman for Culture, Media and Sport.
The policy did best with 2024 Labour voters, with 68% of those who supported the move voting for the Government at the last election. This is despite Labour voting down the proposal, with 336 Government MPs defeating the amendment during the vote yesterday.
Max Wilkinson MP, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Culture, Media and Sport, said:
“Labour and the Tories scored a massive own goal by failing to take Premier League games out from behind a paywall. More people believed Maradona about the ‘hand of God’ than think this is a bad idea.
“Ministers should have seen sense, listened to their own voters and backed our amendment yesterday. Yet Labour MPs voted against while the Tories sat on their hands.
“The fight doesn’t stop here. Lib Dems will bring our call for free-to-air football back to Parliament as soon as possible. This will give the Government a second chance to listen to the millions of people who back this proposal to ditch the paywall for just ten games a year and put the beautiful game back in the living rooms of all fans.”
