Prospective Westminster Parliamentary Candidate for Oldham East and Saddleworth

9 Oct 2026

The Local Party Executive of Oldham Liberal Democrats invites applications for the selection of a Prospective Westminster Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency of Oldham East and Saddleworth. Applications must be received by the Returning Officer no later than noon on 23rd October 2026.

Oldham East and Saddleworth is a constituency in Greater Manchester covering the eastern half of Oldham, surrounding suburban neighbourhoods, and the rural parish of Saddleworth. Historically, the area was built on the textile industry, particularly cotton spinning, with coal mining also playing an important role. The decline of both industries during the late 20th century left many parts of the constituency facing significant economic deprivation, particularly in eastern Oldham, although the suburban and rural areas are generally more affluent. House prices remain below both regional and national averages.

The constituency features a range of areas from rural and semi rural affluent areas, to Victorian terraced areas with a higher than average incidence of deprivation. Child poverty is almost double the UK average, and unemployment benefit claims are comparatively high. Home ownership is around the national average.

Politically, the constituency is divided between Labour, and independents in the urban areas, with Reform UK, Conservative and Liberal Democrat representation in urban, suburban and rural communities. Around 59% of voters supported leaving the European Union in the 2016 referendum, above the UK average of 52%. At the last local elections in 2026, Labour’s vote collapsed across the borough (which covers two constituencies) losing 8 councillors, the major benefactors being Reform UK and local independents. Reform also gained seats from Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.

The seat has been held by Labour since it was created in 1997 most recently by Debbie Abrahams since 2011.
