Prospective Westminster Parliamentary Candidate for Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton

9 Oct 2026

The Local Party Executive of Oldham Liberal Democrats invites applications for the selection of a Prospective Westminster Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency of Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton. Applications must be received by the Returning Officer no later than noon on 23rd October 2026 .

Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton is a constituency in Greater Manchester covering the western half of Oldham, including much of the town centre, together with the neighbouring towns of Chadderton and Royton.

The area developed around the textile industry, particularly cotton spinning, with coal mining also playing a significant role in its economy. Following the decline of both industries during the late 20th century, many communities experienced high levels of deprivation, with much of central Oldham among the most deprived areas in England. While Chadderton and Royton also have industrial roots and pockets of deprivation, their outer suburbs include more affluent residential neighbourhoods. House prices across the constituency remain below regional and national averages.

At the last local elections in 2026, Labour’s vote collapsed across the borough (which covers two constituencies) losing 8 councillors, the major benefactors being Reform UK and local independents. Reform also gained seats from Conservatives. Approximately 61% of voters supported Brexit in the 2016 referendum.

Since the constituency was created in 1997 it has been held by Labour, most recently Jim McMahon since 2015.
