This is an exciting opportunity to join the St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire Liberal Democrats at a pivotal moment for local and national politics. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to play a leading role in our team through a defining period of growth and electoral success.

The years ahead will bring significant political change. Cambridgeshire is likely undergoing local government reorganisation, which will replace the existing county and district councils with new unitary authorities. That means a major round of elections to fight, before defending the constituency at the next General Election.

This role puts you at the heart of shaping and delivering those winning campaigns.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to take their first or next steps in a career in politics or campaigning. You do not need to have done this before. What matters is that you are motivated, well organised and eager to learn.

You will receive full training and ongoing support, working alongside some of the party's most experienced campaigners, councillors and an MP, all committed to helping you develop. You will take on real responsibility from the start, and your work will make a direct difference to people's lives and to the success of the campaigns you help run.

Above all, this role calls for a strong self-starter: someone who can manage their own time and workload, take the initiative and deliver clear results. If you are the kind of person who sees what needs doing and gets on with it, this role is for you.

About the role

As Local Party Organiser, you will support the work of the Liberal Democrats across St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire so that:

  • the local party's membership and volunteer base grows and thrives;
  • the local party's fundraising capacity increases to support local campaigning, including by the Member of Parliament;
  • the local party's capacity to fight elections is strengthened, and campaigning activity and internal and external communications are well coordinated;
  • More on the ground campaigning activity takes place;
  • an increased number of Liberal Democrats are elected to the new unitary authority.
  • we increase our majority at the next Parliamentary election.

Priorities will be set by the local executive and campaign strategy team, in consultation with regional campaign management staff.

Key responsibilities

  • Support the local party's campaigning in strategic planning and campaign organisation.
  • Recruit, train, manage and motivate volunteers, and lead volunteer teams across doorstep, telephone, online and delivery activity.
  • Plan and deliver a sustained programme of doorstep and telephone voter contact.
  • Oversee and contribute to the production of campaign literature, both local and constituency-wide, in line with the local party literature plan.
  • Build and develop the local party's digital campaigning capacity.
  • Organise volunteers to enter and manage data in the party's campaign database, observing data protection rules, and enter data yourself where required.
  • Liaise with the regional party (East of England), neighbouring local parties, and the local and surrounding council groups.
  • Support the fundraising group as far as your other duties allow.
  • Undertake training to develop and update the skills the role requires.
  • Carry out such other duties as your line manager may reasonably require to further effective campaigning, communication and organisation in the area.

General duties

In addition, you will:

  • adhere to all health and safety and fire regulations, and cooperate with the local party to maintain good standards of health and safety;
  • uphold ethical and professional standards, and not behave in a manner likely to bring the party into disrepute;
  • promote and sustain a responsible attitude towards equal opportunities and diversity within the party; and
  • demonstrate a commitment to ongoing learning and development, and take part in training relevant to the role.

Person specification

Essential

  • A strong self-starter, able to work unsupervised, manage your own time and workload, and prioritise effectively across a wide variety of tasks.
  • A can-do attitude and resilience in pressured, sensitive or difficult situations.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with, and maintain the confidence of, a wide variety of people.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to motivate and manage a team, and to work effectively as part of one.
  • The ability to delegate effectively.
  • The ability to meet deadlines.
  • A willingness to learn new skills, software and ways of working, and to make the most of the training and support on offer.
  • Sympathy with the aims and values of the Liberal Democrats.
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the local area, its politics and its communities.
  • The ability to produce effective political literature.
  • Experience of recruiting, mobilising and managing volunteers.
  • Experience of election campaigns and campaign management.
  • Good digital skills, including experience of, or a willingness to learn, Liberal Democrat campaign systems such as Connect, Lighthouse and Affinity Publisher, alongside social media, website updates and other specialist software.

Workplace

Your working week will be flexible, split between working from home and campaigning activity in St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire. You may also visit neighbouring local parties around Cambridgeshire, and may occasionally be asked to attend staff meetings in Cambridge or London.

This role may be taken on as a part-time position (3 days a week) with the possibility of extending to full time. If you would prefer to work part  time or full time please mention this in your application.
