Prospective Westminster Parliamentary Candidate for Broxtowe

The Local Party Executive of Broxtowe Liberal Democrats invite applications for selection of the Prospective Westminster Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency of Broxtowe. Applications must be received by the Returning Officer no later than 5pm on August 20th.

Broxtowe constituency is situated in the county of Nottinghamshire, on the western border near Derbyshire. On the eastern side of the Erewash valley it is a mixed urban and rural constituency encompassing pockets of both affluence (such as Beeston Fields Drive) and high deprivation (such as the former coal mining area of Eastwood, famously the birthplace of D. H. Lawrence). The populations in the north of the constituency are a mix of rural areas and former mining communities that suffered when the mines closed in the 1980’s. The southern areas are more affluent due to the presence of major local employers, but there are significant regions of poverty across the borough. The University of Nottingham, Boots pharmaceutical headquarters, the Queen’s Medical Centre and Royal Mail sorting office are all significant employers also clustered in the south of the constituency, which also has excellent public transport links into the city.

In July 2026 the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government announced their decision to reorganize Nottinghamshire and Nottingham City into two unitary authorities with councillor elections in May 2027 and unification from April 2028. This will split the Broxtowe constituency between the new unitary authorities with the majority being in the one with the city. This solution is unwanted by a large proportion of Broxtowe residents, especially because the city council is just beginning to emerge from special measures. We can also foresee a fight to prevent any attempt to gerrymander the new council wards to retain Labour strongholds and ensure the fair representation by the people whatever the final council organization.
