Responsible to: The Head of the Liberal Democrat Whips’ Office, House of Lords

Tenure: Full-time

Holiday Entitlement: 28 days per annum

Hours: 40 hours per week

Location: House of Lords (with the possibility of some home working on Fridays)

Job specification

This is an exciting opportunity to work with the 75-strong Liberal Democrat group in the House of Lords. We are looking for a digital communications officer who will work with our peers and our digital, media and whips teams, to promote our legislative and political work in the House of Lords to a broad national audience.

The successful candidate will be responsible for creating engaging online content and managing the Lords' parliamentary group's digital and social media.  We are looking for a confident, fun individual who can manage diverse priorities and personalities. 

The role also includes some diary management, which will be done alongside other duties. 

Key responsibilities 

  • Manage social media channels, including planning, creating and posting content
  • Produce compelling video content from concept to completion, including clipping, scripting, filming and editing
  • Maximise reach and engagement by using analytics to determine the most effective digital content and delivery
  • Create graphics and other visuals to communicate our policies and campaigns effectively
  • Draft, adapt and develop online content for different channels, including newsletters, WhatsApp groups and social media 
  • Manage social media channels 
  • Recommend ways of improving internal and external digital communication strategies, including the use of mediums such as podcasts to promote the work of Lib Dem peers
  • Provide diary management support to the Liberal Democrat Leader and Chief Whip in the Lords, including helping to plan for their participation in meetings and events

 Essential skills and experience 

  • Experience of successfully managing social media channels for a high-profile organisation, brand, campaign or politician
  • Strong videography and editing skills
  • Good visual design skills - an ability to produce high-quality, visually appealing content
  • Ability to be proactive and work well both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities; to work to tight deadlines; and to work on several different initiatives at the same time
  • Excellent writing ability, with an attention to the accuracy of language 
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the confidence to interact with politicians and staff at all levels
  • A strong understanding of the UK’s current political environment and how to engage with Liberal Democrat members, and with voters 
  • Good diary management 
  • A deep interest in politics, policy and the aims and values of the Liberal Democrats 

Desirable skills and experience

  • Knowledge and understanding of the Liberal Democrats, including the opportunities and challenges facing the Party
  • Knowledge and understanding of the House of Lords
