Campaigns Assistant (Westmorland, Furness and Eden)

Purpose of the job

Please note: Due to the nature of this role, a full driving licence and own vehicle is essential.

Westmorland, Furness & Eden Liberal Democrats are seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated person to play a key role in the lead up to the campaign to retain control of Westmorland & Furness council in the local elections in 2027.

This is a fantastic opportunity to help build on our previous success in both local and national elections, by building the infrastructure and organisation necessary to elect a Lib Dem led council.

Your role will be ‘hands on’. Your duties will vary, but will include being responsible for organising and leading canvassing sessions, helping with the production of campaign literature and being responsible for the organisation and running of the poster campaign in the lead up to the next local elections.

This role will also involve supporting Tim Farron in his parliamentary duties across his current constituency, for example accompanying Tim on visits across the constituency.

Salary: £25,000 per annum

Hours: 37.5 hours per week – you will work flexibly to take account of early evening and weekend canvassing sessions.

Tenure: fixed-term contract until two months after the date of the local elections in 2027.

Location: The constituency office in Kendal with trips around the Westmorland, Furness and Eden area required.

The line manager for this role will be the Constituency Campaigns Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Recruiting, developing and regularly communicating with volunteers.
  • Assisting with the literature output from production to distribution, including delivering literature.
  • Assisting with the delivery of a programme of doorstep and telephone voter contacts to mutually agreed targets.
  • Joining councillors, candidates and volunteers out on the doorsteps to do delivery, surveying and canvassing.
  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of the local volunteer delivery network.
  • Responsible for the organisation, running, and delivery of the stake board campaign for general election.
  • Responsible for membership engagement, including regular contact with members, and organising and delivering members events and campaign action days.
  • Retain records and information confidentially and in line with the data protection legislation.
  • Undertake such training as is required and recommended to develop and update the required skills.
  • Undertake any other such duties as the line manager may require to further effective communication, campaigning, and organisation.

 

Person Specification

The successful candidate will be hard working, flexible, organised, pragmatic and politically astute. They will have experience of working in a busy office. They will be willing and able to support the MP and the local party administratively and logistically and be willing and able to work with both paid staff members and volunteers.

 

Essential experience / qualities

  • Experience working in a busy office.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise a demanding workload to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise and complete tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team.
  • Ability to create and sustain a positive working relationship with the MP and external bodies that generates confidence, respect, credibility, and trust.
  • Energy and commitment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Working knowledge of standard office practises and computer packages.
  • Will be sympathetic to the aims and objectives of the Liberal Democrats.
  • Due to the rural nature of the constituency, a driving licence and access to a car is essential, for which travel expenses will be paid.

 

Desired experience / qualities

  • Experience working in a political environment.
  • Experience of political campaigning with Liberal Democrats.
  • Experience of working with volunteers/in a voluntary organisation.
  • Experience of engaging with a wide range of audiences on behalf of others.
  • Knowledge of the constituency and local issues.
