Job title: Federal Communications and Elections Committee Chair (FCEC)

Responsible to: The Federal Board 

Salary: N/A; this is a voluntary role 

Tenure: Until the next scheduled appointment for a three-year term, due Q1 2029    

Location: This role may be conducted predominantly remotely. Some in-person meetings may be required, usually in Lib Dem HQ (66 Buckingham Gate, London), especially during a general election.

Time requirement:  Flexible, with meetings at various times of the day, including during normal working hours. More time is required during a General Election.

Introduction

This is your opportunity to play a pivotal role in the Party’s work. You will help us win by ensuring our communications and campaigns work as effectively as possible.

You, alongside other members of the FCEC, shall oversee the implementation of the Party’s strategy in relation to elections, campaigns and communications. 

As FCEC Chair, you will also be a member of the Party’s Federal Board and therefore work to deliver our overall strategy. You will be asked to chair the party’s general election campaign.

This person will be able to effectively chair a committee and work with both volunteers and staff to ensure the party’s strategy is being implemented as effectively as possible. 

FCEC meets at least six times a year, scheduled outside of working hours and typically via Zoom. Any physical meetings will take place at Lib Dem HQ (66 Buckingham Gate, London) or at a location determined by the committee.  Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. 

The Federal Board elects this role. In the event of a contested election, candidates will be required to take part in an online hustings. 

Major responsibilities

  1. Chair the Federal Communications and Elections Committee;
  2. Chair any group formed for the management of elections to the House of Commons;
  3. Be a member of the Federal Board;
  4. Provide reports on the activities of FCEC to the Board meetings.
  5. Oversee the implementation of the Party’s strategy in relation to elections, campaigns and communications;

 

Person specification

Candidates for the role of FCEC Chair must be members of the Liberal Democrats and able to demonstrate their affinity with the party's values, as well as an understanding of its structures, relationships, and financial needs. A commitment to the Liberal Democrats is required, as is significant experience of campaigning. Induction and training will be available.

Prior experience in managing large projects and in running a committee, board, or similar body is desirable. They will be a strong listener, taking input from specialist staff, while also being capable of asking challenging questions so as to hold others to account. 

They will be able to build strong interpersonal and professional relationships in a multi-stakeholder environment.
