Introduction

There is one casual vacancy to be filled by the Federal Board by election.

This is your opportunity to play a pivotal role in the Party’s work in a volunteer non-executive position. You will play an important role in ensuring the Party is an effective, supporting and inclusive organisation.

You will also have an important role in helping to deliver the party’s overall strategy set by party conference. It includes five organisational priorities: developing a compelling liberal narrative, promoting campaigning excellence, improving our record on diversity and equality, enhancing the membership experience and working together as one party.

FPDC reports directly to the Federal Board. It is responsible for overseeing the party’s membership and volunteer training work, and also has an important role in the approval and oversight of the party’s affiliated organisations.

More information can be found in Article 14 of our constitution.

FPDC meets roughly four or five times a year, scheduled outside of working hours, and this role can be conducted remotely. Reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed should there be a requirement to travel.

The chair of FPDC is elected from among the members elected to the committee by the Board and becomes a member of the Federal Board. The current chair, elected in 2023, is Claire Hudson.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating, planning and supervising the training strategy for the Federal Party;
  • Coordinating, planning and supervising the diversity engagement strategy for the Party;
  • Coordinating, planning and supervising the membership recruitment, retention and activation strategy for the party;
  • Working with the party’s Affiliated Organisations to support them in recruiting and maintaining membership and implementing the Party's policies on diversity; and
  • Making regulations governing the Registered Supporter Scheme, along with supervising the administration and the promotion of the Scheme.

Person specification

You must be a member of the Liberal Democrats and able to demonstrate your affinity with the values of the party, as well as an understanding of how membership and volunteering works in either a political party or a similar other organisation.

A commitment to the Liberal Democrats is required but evidence of substantial prior involvement is not and induction and training will be available. The Party is keen to encourage new talent.

Applicants will be expected to be able to demonstrate experience working in diversity, training or membership/supporter development. It is desirable that applicants have a proven track-record of delivering successful programmes in any of the three areas listed above and that they understand the oversight and scrutiny elements of a non-executive role.

The Liberal Democrats are committed to diversity and inclusion and we welcome applications from candidates from all walks of life.
